little revolutionaries

my 6 year old knows nothing about george washington. could give a damn about christopher columbus. i have not wasted her time (or intelligence) teaching her that watered-down and revised story of "american history," that we've allowed ourselves and our children to be bamboozled with for so many decades.

but ask her who harriet tubman is. ask her who malcom x is. marcus garvey. assata shakur. these are the people that are relevant to our lives and our history, and at this early age, when children are impressionable, and curious, and brilliant...it is imperative that we present them with figures who are proud, powerful, community-oriented, and intelligent.

in the future...when she learns about columbus, she will not hear the far-fetched story about how he sailed his ship to an "unknown" land, and discovered it (and the villages of people who were already on the land). she will know him as one of the many europeans who tricked, trapped, raped and killed millions of afrikan men, women and children.

because that's real.

my children will not have 13 years of bullshit to unlearn...my children will not be brainwashed...confined...lied to...institutionalized, and for that...i give thanks.

weather report

assata likes doing video reports on different things. she named herself sasparilla. she loves to be in front of the camera. she did some research on a weather website and found out the weather in atlanta, pittsburgh, and akron. we made little weather symbols and used a map we had in the armoire full of books and art supplies.

sasparilla put on her little white blazer and her womens size 9 silver high heel mary janes, got in front of the mirror and put her hair in a ponytail, applied her lip gloss, and she was camera ready.

s: i am glad that i get recess more often because i'm home schooled. and i like going to my grandparents, and they let me swing on the swings alot. and i like watching care bears at their house, and listening to veggie tales.


i like going to the park and i like to dance around the house every day with my mom and brothers. and i like to dance with my ballerina doll. and go to the library. i want to go to a dance academy and learn ballet. i love african dance and drumming.

w: i like to play, i like to drum and i'm a good drummer. i like to read books and i like to say hi to dad in his studio. i like to draw pictures for my mommy, and she dances for me when i drum. and my brother is my favorite drummer. i like to go with uncle jermaine, and i like to play with grandpa.
